  Computers

  A

A computer has been trained to "read"people’s minds by looking at scans1 of their brains. It might lead to better understanding of how and where the brain stores information.

"This might lead to better treatment for language disorders and learning disabilities,"said Tom Mitchell of the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, who led the study.

Mitchell’s team used a type of brain scan that could see real-time brain activity. They asked nine students to think of 58 different words, while making the images of their brain activities.

"We gave these instructions to people, 'We are going to show you words and we would like you to see the word and think of its characteristics,’"Mitchell said.

And then they created a kind of "average"image of a word. "If I show you the brain images for two words, the main thing you notice is that they look pretty much alike. However, if you look at them for a while, you might see small differences,"Mitchell said.

"We have the program work out the brain activities over all of the words that somebody has looked at. That gives us the average when somebody thinks of a word, and then we get that average out from all those images,"Mitchell added.

  Then the test came.

"After we train on the other 58 words, we can say 'Here are two new words you have not seen, phone and airplane.’"The computer was asked to choose which brain image matched the word "plane".

The computer passed the test. It could predict2 when a brain image was taken when a person thought of the word "airplane"or "phone".

The next step is to study brain activities for phrases.

"I want to basically use that to study language processing in the brain."

Mitchell was surprised at how similar brain activities were among the nine volunteers, although the work was difficult.

For an experiment to work well, the patient must sit or lie very still for several minutes.

Second Life is an online imaginary world. Computer users can create a new self and experience a separate life there. The company Linden Lab of San Francisco, California created Second Life in 2003.

To play Second Life, a computer user signs up at the Second Life website. Then he or she creates an imaginary image, called an avatar1. Some people try to make their avatar look as close to their real self as possible. Other people change their sex2 or become an imaginary creature as their Second Life avatar.

Once you have your avatar you become a "resident3"of Second Life. In some ways the imaginary world is like the real world. Your avatar can make friends with other Second Life avatars. Residents can go to school, run a business, and even get married. However, there are also activities in Second Life that are impossible in the real world. For example, if you do not feel like walking to that park near your Second Life home, why not fly?

You can get your first Second Life account4 for free. But it costs money to get other accounts and to buy land. The virtual world has its own money, the Linden dollars. You spend them on virtual clothes, property, entertainment and many other things. You can earn Linden dollars by getting a job. That unreal money has a real-life value. About 250 Linden dollars are worth one American dollar.

Second Life is popular with schools and businesses. Many universities have set up schoolyards on the website. Many kinds of stores can also be found there. Entertainers sometimes perform on Second Life with their Second Life avatars.

How many people do you think play Second Life? It is said that the total number of residents is more than 13 million from more than 100 countries.
